I am a computational social scientist at Microsoft Research.  My early work analyzed the relationship between network topology and human behavior.  Since then I became one of the leaders in designing, building, and conducting "virtual lab" experiments using Amazon's Mechanical Turk.  This research stream turned into a study of the gig workers who power many modern apps, websites, and AI systems culminating in Ghost Work (coauthored with Mary L. Gray). Most recently I've been exploring the future of work post COVID-19.

Here is a timeline of the research questions I've worked on.
